You aren’t reaching enough people
The first issue you might be having if your business is struggling to grow is that you’re simply not reaching enough new people.
Your flow of new people and ‘leads’ is really pretty essential, if people don’t know you exist then they can’t work with you!
It doesn’t mean that you need to be reaching huge numbers of people. Part of what matters here is your business model, your niche, the offers you’re selling, your pricing and your conversion rate.
I teach how to create a Profitable Business Model in this free training which you can get here:
How to fix it
You need to be very honest about the results your marketing is getting. I always think that giving a strategy at least 12 weeks, if not closer to 6 months to work makes sense, but after that time if you’re being consistent with it, you may need to try something different.
Once you’re looking at the actual numbers in your business then you can make decisions on how to switch up your marketing strategy. A trend I’m seeing lately is that supplementing a solid content marketing based strategy with paid ads is a good way to get better results in terms of reaching new ‘right fit’ people.
Your niche message isn’t resonating
Another issue that can stunt your growth is that your message isn’t resonating with people. Sometimes our messaging is just a bit wooly and doesn’t really land with people. Poor messaging means you and your business can become forgettable and won’t stand out. Plus a lack of good messaging can mean that your potential clients and customers can’t fully understand how you can actually help them, so they don’t choose to work with you.
How to fix it
There’s a couple of ways you can work on fixing this if you feel it’s an issue. Firstly, try layering in an extra laser focused element of messaging around something that your people identify as. For example, let’s say you’re a health coach who works with men who are struggling with their energy levels. Layering in an extra messaging element might look like using language around how these are all men in corporate jobs, or that they are all men who are stay at home dads, or that they are men who would see themselves as adventurous.
That extra layer, especially connected to how people self identify can make all the difference with how your messaging lands for people.
Your offers aren’t well structured
If your offers are confusing people, not well priced or if together, the offers don’t make sense as a business model, then your coaching business can feel stuck.
To get clients to work with you, your offers have to make sense to them. They need to understand the outcomes working with you will help them experience and they need to feel like you understand where they are now.
Offers that aren’t well structured, or having too many similar offers can all feel really confusing to people and they just won’t buy.
How to fix it
Review your offers and check that you’re communicating the transformation or shift from where they are now to where they want to be. If you have multiple offers, check that there’s enough differentiation between them.
Review your overall business model too. Again, check out my Profitable Business Model Training above and consider having an entry offer, trust building offer and a profit generating offer in your offer suite which can be a helpful way to structure multiple offers if you’re not going for a very specific high ticket or low ticket model.
You’re not actively selling
If you’re not actively selling then you’re leaving money and clients on the table! Many coaches have no intentional sales plan which means that they’re hoping on a wish and a prayer that someone will buy from them.
The truth is that these days we do need to be a lot smarter and more intentional about sales if we want to grow our businesses.
How to fix it
I suggest to my clients that they have three key sales systems in place in their businesses. One which passively sells all the time – always on. One which involves directly reaching out to your hottest leads and one which uses scarcity and urgency – that is on and off.
When you use these three systems to be intentional about sales, you will get more clients and customers and see your business grow.
You’ve hit a capacity ceiling
You’re only one person with only 24 hours in a day and you can only get so much done. If you feel like you’ve hit an income ceiling, then one possible cause is that you’ve simply hit a capacity issue.
You need time in your business to market, to deliver your offers and services, to nurture your people, to do admin tasks and to be able to work on developing your business not just working in the day to day part of it.
Without the capacity to do more marketing, more delivery or to work ‘on’ your business, you’ll struggle to grow.
How to fix it
You need to release more capacity – this could look like outsourcing some tasks, for example your admin tasks to a VA. You could also audit how you’re spending your time and what tasks are most effective then focus on the 20% of tasks that are getting you 80% of your results. You could also look at increasing your prices or developing more scalable offers so you gain more income in the same amount of time.
You’re not energetically ready to hold the next level of success
This is a biggie! But if you’re not energetically ready for the next level of success, you’ll subconsciously keep yourself small. This can look like a mix of a lack of confidence, impostor syndrome, your nervous system struggling to cope, or your actual management systems not being able to keep pace with your growth.
How to fix it
Just becoming aware of the fact that you need to be looking at and supporting yourself energetically is going to help! Journaling around your relationship with money, looking at the patterns you have in your business that aren’t helpful, or where you get triggered and being curious about what’s underneath it all is a good place to start too. Thinking about the capacity of your nervous system to hold space for your clients – all of this can be super helpful to explore.
