Why the Feast-or-Famine Cycle Is a Problem
Being stuck in the feast-or-famine cycle is incredibly hard on your nervous system. If you’ve ever worried about where your next client is coming from, or whether you’ll cover next month’s expenses, you’ll know how stressful it can be.
That constant uncertainty can make your business feel unstable and unsafe – and that stress ripples into every aspect of your work. It affects your creativity, your decision-making, and your ability to show up confidently for your clients.
From a sustainability point of view, it’s not a good place to stay long-term. The goal isn’t to chase clients month after month – it’s to create consistency so your business feels safe and therefore your not having to deal with anxiety about income each month!
How I Went from Feast-or-Famine to Consistent Income
Before I share some more practical tips, I wanted to share my own journey with escaping the feast-to-famine cycle of income in my business. A few years ago I really struggled with this and had plenty of sticky, scary moments where I wasn’t sure where my income was going to come from to get me through the next 1-3 months.
I can remember having chats with my then partner about how close to the wire things were and it really wasn’t a good feeling at all.
That was when I realised I needed to make a big change to how I was doing business to turn this situation around.
Now I have a very strong cashflow and much higher cash income months mapped out ahead of me – all detailed down in my cashflow spreadsheet. Instead of 1-3 months of financial safety, I have 9 months of expenses, including what I pay myself, all sorted.
And I have to say, as someone who has experienced both sides of this, it really is life changing to be in this position. I’m now the sole earner of my household with two young children and my business is what sustains us.
The following tips draw heavily on what has helped me change my situation around, as well as what I see work with my clients.
Mindset Shifts
Something significant that I believe helped me change my business from a feast-or-famine cycle to more consistent, high cash months was my mindset.
Ultimately it was taking complete radical responsibility for myself and my financial situation that led to me being able to show up in the way I needed to in order to create the change I wanted to see.
It had been easy up until that point to blame others, society or various factors for myself being stuck – but when I shifted that and made it all my responsibility – the good and the bad – was I able to really make the change. From a more spiritual perspective I believe that helped me attract the kind of income consistency I wanted.
I’m still on that journey, but I’ve seen a huge positive shift.
Consistent Marketing + Selling Equals Consistent Income
The next key piece of creating consistent income is consistent marketing. Simply put: if you’re not consistently showing up and connecting with new people, you won’t create consistent income.
For me, creating my Searchable Show – and showing up consistently has been a game-changer. Visibility is crucial, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean social media, it does mean finding the right platform or method that works for your unique niche and ideal client – and doing it consistently.
Alongside marketing, consistent selling is essential. This can be done in high-touch ways, like one-to-one conversations, or more passively through tools like automated funnels. Funnels can help generate steady income, but they often require testing, ad spend, and ongoing optimisation, so they’re more advanced strategies.
The key point: consistent income requires consistent marketing and consistent selling.
Your Business Model: Are Your Offers Set Up for Consistent Income?
Another crucial factor is your business model and offers. Ask yourself:
- Are my services priced appropriately for my time and expertise?
- Do I offer payment plans or full payments?
- Do I have multiple offers or programs to generate steady income?
For me, creating a group program membership hybrid like my Wholehearted Business Program was a game-changer. Offering a long-term program over 12 months helped me generate predictable, consistent income.
Look carefully at your offers, pricing, and structure. Consistent income comes from offers intentionally designed to support your financial goals, not just a single coaching session here and there.
Create a Cashflow
While having a strong cash flow isn’t quite the same as having consistent income, it ultimately can help achieve a similar result in terms of a sustainable business that doesn’t trash your nervous system. A good cash flow may look like some months being much higher than others, but because the cash carries over it feels more stable.
Obviously creating consistent income supports a healthy cash flow. Being aware of what your cash flow looks like by using a cash flow spread sheet like the one I share inside the Powerful Pricing Workshop will help you spot patterns and trends in how your income arrives so you can address those strategically and support that more consistent flow of income.
It Will Take Time
Finally, it’s important to remember that consistent income doesn’t happen overnight. If you’re in the first year or two of your coaching business, fluctuations are normal. They’re even normal for most other businesses further down the line too – the main thing to remember is that consistent income is something you can create intentionally.
Building consistency takes time because all the pieces need to be in place: your messaging, niche, offers, marketing, and sales process. Tweaks and adjustments along the way are part of the journey.
Working with a good mentor can speed up the process, helping you focus on what matters most and get results more quickly. Even then, patience is key – consistency comes from laying a solid foundation and taking strategic action over time.
