quizzes to help you become your own expert

I can remember when I was 13 years old, I loved doing any kind of magazine quiz as I thought they were so much fun! From what kind of boy I should date, to the colour lipstick I should wear to what kind of friend I was, I found any kind of quiz really good fun.

Now as a coach, I still love a good quiz for helping me know myself better and for helping my clients become their own experts. Of course some online quizzes are a load of crap, but I’ve found 3 key ones that I often use with clients that are most definitely the real deal.

What I really love about these is just how much you can get to know yourself better through them. Of course, no quiz is 100% accurate, so it’s always a good opportunity to see what rings true to you and what doesn’t resonate – and to find out more about yourself from that perspective too.

Discovering your Love Language using the 5 Love Languages Quiz

The 5 Love Languages is a concept developed by Gary Chapman as a way of identifying how you show love to others and how you like to receive love in a way that actually makes you feel loved. The 5 different languages include physical touch, acts of service, gifts, words of affirmation and quality time. The idea is that if one person in a relationship has a love language of physical touch and another is acts of service, the two people can feel unloved because the other is ‘speaking a different language’. While the love languages was developed for intimate relationships, they actually make sense in a lot of different kinds of relationships as well.

Learning mine wasn’t only useful for my relationship and my friendships, but also for my relationship with myself. I can understand why I like shopping for myself as receiving gifts is my second love language – it’s a handy way to see how you can actually show yourself more love too.

Getting to know your strengths with 16 Personalities

Based on Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, 16 Personalities is a test that gives you one of 16 different personality variations. I have to say I have always found this particular test freakishly accurate. At the end of the test you’re given a 4 letter type based on where you score across 4 different areas. I’m an ENFJ which is broken down to Extrovert, Intuitive, Feeling, Judging. I did score about 60% extrovert but I resonate more with a lot of introverted tendencies, so I do feel I’m a bit of a mix. This explains the different areas in more detail. As you can see from this ENFJ description it sounds like coaching is pretty natural to me!

What I’ve found with this one personally and also with clients is that it highlights a lot of what you probably know already, but gives you some great ideas for how you can play to your strengths and manage your weaknesses.

Taking control of your habits with the Four Tendencies

The Four Tendencies were developed by Gretchen Ruben when she wrote her book Better Than Before which focuses on how people best create and keep new habits. She’s identified 4 personality types when it comes to habits, Upholders, Questioners, Rebels and Obligers. Understanding which tendency you are can help you understand how you best develop new habits and the specific ways you need to approach things to be most successful. She’s even written a new book just about these Four Tendencies as they’ve proved to be quite popular!

As well as these kind of quizzes, if you’re a little more woo (like me!) learning about your astrological chart or checking out how numerology impacts you can be super interesting too!

I’d love to know what you think of the quizzes and if they’re helpful! Nowadays it can be so easy to just be led by what the latest ‘expert’ suggests, instead what if we all became our own experts? Knowing yourself in this way can help improve your health, your relationships, your career and so much more.

What’s your Love Language / 16 Personality Type / Tendency? Does it ring true to you?

Fellow ENFJ! I find the Myer-Briggs test so interesting, both for my own personality and for realising where my way of thinking differs from others and how best to work with this. Going to do the other quizzes now!
