Life improvement results

This is my final post in the Life Improvement series I’ve been doing in partnership with Homebase. Check out my previous posts: why improving your home improves your life and putting life improvement to the test. If you’re not already familiar with the concept of Life Improvement then let me bring you up to speed. It’s the creation of interior designer Oliver Heath, and quite simply it’s the idea that our home environment directly impacts our health and wellbeing, and thus in improving our living environments we will also improve our health and wellbeing. It’s a concept that I wholeheartedly agree with, and having experienced it only makes me more passionate about this way to approach health and wellbeing.

The concept of Life Improvement looks at several different areas of the home, such as private spaces, light, sleep, storage and plants and nature. The area of Life Improvement I was to get familiar with was social spaces.

I’ve talked about how our lack of a dining table in our old flat really irked me, I hated the fact that we ate our meals in front of the TV! To really put the concept of Life Improvement to the test, Homebase gifted me with a new dining table and chairs to let me experience the difference having a social space for eating would make for me and our family. Alongside the big dining table, we also got a smaller kitchen table which we also dine at (mostly to save the mess on the carpet from Finley!)

Here’s some of the big changes I noticed:

I eat slower when I’m sat at a dining table.

 I eat more mindfully.

It feels like our home has a ‘hub’.

For the first time *ever* I had my parents round for a Sunday roast!

James and I feel more connected because we actually talk over dinner rather than being distracted by the TV.

And the biggie…

I think it helps me to eat more healthily. It’s so easy to just snack constantly or choose a convenience option when you are sitting on the sofa. Dining at a table makes it more of a conscious event, and that in itself has made me want to eat better and cook healthier meals for my family.

Said family Sunday roast!

Obviously moving house to a much bigger space as been a huge life change alongside having new dining spaces, but that has really made me aware how our home can either help or hinder our health and wellbeing. I’ve noticed so many changes, from having more energy due to living in a lighter brighter space, feeling more relaxed because we aren’t surrounded by clutter and being able to cook healthier meals because we have a fridge large enough to keep more fresh produce! All of these things impact us and interlink to improve our health and wellbeing.

I’d love to know how you feel your home environment currently impacts your health and wellbeing. Is there anything about your living space you’d love to change?

Glad it’s worked out well for you :) Sounds like it’s such a great change for you. More space is always a good thing!
I was so adamant to have a dining table in my flat when I moved in – I can’t stand the thought of eating all my meals on my lap on the sofa! I take more time and effort eating and enjoying my food that way.

So glad it’s all going well for you. Having so much natural light is always so good too. Our current kitchen doesn’t have a window so it can feel a bit gloomy in there sometimes- I’m looking forward to that. We are going to get a bigger fridge too- if I get some bits for making a salad for lunch they totally fill our fridge and stuff gets balanced all over the place, so it will help us with that too. At the moment we share an office too (the spare room) but the aim is for us to have one office each, so I can have space there for my yoga mat so that I always do stretches when I get back from a run! At the moment I have to find space in our living room which isn’t always so easy!

No need to feel ashamed of eating your dinner in front of the TV in your old place – during my uni years, I used to HAVE to eat my dinner *cringes* in bed!!! It’s awful, and I cannot believe I used to abide eating and living that way, but hey, student house problems eh. So I love eating at our beautiful table now and setting everything up etc. I agree you tend to enjoy your food more, chew slower and have limited distractions.

    I love your dining chairs!
